Qualitative research on management accounting: achievements and potential
Introduction
This chapter provides an overview of (r) the rationale for qualitative research in management accounting, (ii) how qualitative research serves theory development, (iii) guiding principles for qualitative investigation, (iv) problems reflected in existing qualitative studies, and (v) the future potential of qualitative research efforts. The aim of the chapter is to build an understanding of qualitative research that enables the reader to appreciate the scientific purpose and theoretical significance of case and field studies. But, it also equips the reader with a critical lens through which to view the theoretical problems and methodological weaknesses of these studies. It gives a basis for evaluating qualitative studies and lays out stepping stones for designing, executing and reporting a qualitative study in management accounting. The chapter closes by identifying current research needs and proposing broad avenues of enquiry that the reader may later wish to follow
