بر اساس نتایج انان که نشان داد رشد شهرها اصول اساسی را دنبال می کند، دو فیزیکدان نظری، لوئیس بتانکور و جفری وست، از پژوهشگران و متخصصان خواستند تا به توسعه نظریه بزرگ برای پایداری شهر کمک کنند. در تحقیق انان، آنها دانشی شهری برای کمک به برنامه ریزان شهری در زمینه مشکلات ناشی از افزایش جمعیت توسعه دادند. اگرچه آنها دیدگاه ارزشمندی برای درک مسائل پایدار شهری ارائه دادند، به برنامه ریزان رویکرد مناسبی برای مشکلات ارائه ندادند. من استدلال می کنم که توسعه یک مرفولوژی برای درک مفهوم هویت شهری، به برنامه ریزان توصیه ای نظر برای پرداختن به امور شهری می دهد از جمله از بابت نگرانی های اخلاقی. در واقع، من مدلی از هویت شهری برای نشان دادن فلسفه شهر توصیه می کنم که به تئوری پایداری شهری کمک می کند.

An Applied Mereology of the City: Unifying Science and Philosophy for Urban Planning
Abstract Based on their research showing that growing cities follow basic prin- ciples, two theoretical physicists, Luis Bettencourt and Geoffrey West, call for researchers and professionals to contribute to a grand theory of urban sustainability. In their research, they develop a ‘science of the city’ to help urban planners addressproblems that arise from population increases. Although they provide valuable insights for understanding urban sustainability issues, they do not give planners a manageable way to approach such problems. I argue that developing an applied mereology to understand the concept of ‘city identity’ gives planners a theoretical device for addressing urban affairs, including ethical concerns. In turn, I devise a model of city identity to show how a ‘philosophy of the city’ contributes to a grand theory of urban sustainability.
Introduction
Through analyzing data sets covering over one hundred cities, a team of researchers found general principles that belong to most cities (Bettencourt et al. 2007). If we consider that knowing such principles is a prerequisite for understanding the identity of a city, their discovery sharpens our conceptualization of the built environment. Based on their findings, recognizable patterns that correlate with the underlying structure of a city’s identity also include problems that arise when urban centers increase in population. Often, such problems involve social and environmental injustice issues (Powell 2009; Colette 2010)
